              BRIEF HISTORY OF PILATES



              Pilates is a method of exercise developed by German-born Joseph Pilates. In 1926, Joseph and Clara Pilates brought their exercise system, originally called "Contrology", to New York City.

              The Pilates method is a low-impact physical movement program that balances the body’s strength & stability with flexibility & articulation, while improving posture and body mechanics. Pilates exercises include just a handful of repetitions because each movement is performed with precision, control and proper body alignment. Concentration is required, which makes Pilates a form of exercise that works both the body and the mind. Pilates’ mindful approach to exercise leaves the body feeling invigorated and the mind clear.

              Joseph H. Pilates’ goal was to provide the public with a method of exercise that anyone could do on their own with no equipment. He believed that everyone could be fit both mentally and physically into old age by adhering to his method.

              Joseph Pilates' matwork exercises are still the bedrock of the method today. Because many are performed while lying on the back, the method is appropriate for most healthy bodies, even those with little exercise experience.

              Pilates is also quite challenging for athletes because it requires that movements begin with the deep stabilizing muscles rather than the mover muscles that athletic activities focus on. The result of practicing Pilates is a body that is strong from the inside out.

              During WWI, Joseph Pilates designed specialized equipment that allowed bedridden patients to exercise, possibly becoming the first manufacturer of rehabilitation apparatus. At his NY City studio, he used his Reformer, Cadillac and Chair, each a platform and springs, to strengthen muscles while in proper alignment. While they may look intimidating and slightly medieval, they are all marvels of simplicity and effectiveness, creating just the right amount of support and challenge to strengthen and realign the body.
